QUESTIONS FOR YOUR BROKER
Make the policy match the passage.
Review hull-and-machinery navigational limits for every island, bank, and transit in the planned route. Check seasonal restrictions, named-storm exclusions, notification requirements, and whether the boat must be hauled or moved to a specified location by a deadline.
| POLICY DETAIL | GET A CLEAR ANSWER |
|---|---|
| Navigation warranty | Are the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, and planned Caribbean stops inside the permitted cruising area? |
| Named windstorm | What is the haul-out deadline, approved location, and proof required? |
| Towing & salvage | Do SeaTow or TowBoatUS memberships cover the route and offshore distance, or is a separate salvage rider needed? |
| Medical evacuation | Who coordinates transport, what limits apply, and what is excluded? |
Keep the emergency plan usable.
Register and test the EPIRB on its service schedule, keep it accessible, and brief every crew member on how and when to activate it. Carry current contact details for the insurer, assistance provider, and emergency contacts in a waterproof location. Understand what the EPIRB triggers; beacon registration does not itself guarantee a particular medevac service or payment.
Coverage terms differ by insurer, vessel, crew, and route. This field note is not insurance advice. Ask a licensed broker to interpret your current policy and confirm any change by endorsement before departure.
